Proof-of-Performance promos are all about timing, but being on the air first isn't enough. During breaking news situations, I strive to create high-quality, eye-catching POPs that still beat competitors to the air. For follow-up POPs, I do my best to grab the viewer's attention, while still making every effort to let the story sell itself.
March 2012 Severe Weather POP
Weather POPs like these are always difficult because the bulk of the severe weather blows through early in the morning, before I get to work. By the time I arrived on this particular day, the rush to get a POP completed was even more hectic. I tried to take a different approach with this one, focusing as much as I could on our viewers and our commitment to protect them.

Severe Weather POP (round 2)
In January 2012, Houston was hit with two rounds of strong thunderstorms. The first resulted in the "Flooding POP" that you see just below this window. The second resulted in this POP. The challenge here was to create a POP that basically highlighted the same elements, but that also looked fresh and didn't get too repetitive.

Flooding POP
When severe weather caught most of Houston off-guard with widespread flooding, KHOU 11 News had Live Team coverage. During events like this, when there is a lot of wall-to-wall coverage, I tend to capture and log elements as they come in. Often this results in an overload of footage and sound, but I always say it's better to be safe than sorry.

Major Accident POP
Dense fog was blamed for a 30+ car pileup on a Houston-area highway. Air 11 was over the scene with live pictures throughout the morning, as more and more people were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital. The challenge with proof spots like this is making them effective without being insensitive.

Tornado Coverage POP
When a strong batch of thunderstorms blew through the Houston area, KHOU 11 News was all-hands on deck. Chief Meteorologist Gene Norman warned viewers ahead of time and actually went to the spot where the tornado touched down to observe the damage himself. This is a prime example of a quick-turn POP, one that took only a couple of hours to get on the air.

Final Shuttle Launch POP
On July 8th, 2011, the shuttle Atlantis blasted off into orbit, ending NASA's shuttle era. There were a lot of questions surrounding this launch, partly due to weather perhaps forcing NASA to cancel, and partly because as soon as this mission ended, thousands of NASA employees would be out of work. This POP was designed to convey the mixed feelings I think everyong was experiencing during this time.

I-Team May 2011 POP
This promo covered the best I-Team stories from the May 2011 book. I created the base for the spot using the iconic I-Team color palette, and created multiple boxes to give the impression that a lot was going on with these stories. This also provided me room to add copy-points, and it helped keep the video looking clean (original video was SD, final spot was HD).

Winter Storm POP
For an entire week Houston was gripped with concerns about a coming ice and snowstorm. When that storm finally arrived, KHOU spread its resources out all over the city. This spot, which was produced the day the ice storm actually hit, was designed to show viewers that during severe weather situations, KHOU is looking out for them.

Defenders - National Guard POP
The Defenders exposed a Texas National Guard General pocketing your tax dollars. The investigation led Governor Perry to remove the general from office, but the Defenders caught up with him again, posted in a popular vacation spot, holding a powerful command position. This promo shows that the Defenders don't stop digging on a story until the job is really done.

Election 2010 POP
Election Night is always a good time for a station to shine. All hands are on deck, reporters are spread out all over the city, and there's just a general excitement surrounding the entire event. For this POP, I made sure to focus on our new media platforms (online and mobile) as well as our on-air performance.

Gene Norman Severe Weather POP
This POP focuses on KHOU's chief meteorologist and his coverage of severe weather. I believe production speed is especially important when working in severe weather proofs. During these situations, I log everything I can live, and then go back to search for any missing pieces of the puzzle.

I-Team Dangerous Pools POP
Another I-Team story that led to legislative changes, this one really struck a chord because it directly affected the safety of Houston children. My goal with this spot was to show just how far the I-Team went to uncover a multitude of violations and flaws in the systems, ultimately leading to changes that will make Houston pools safer.

Wildfires POP
In June of 2011, East Texas saw wildfires like never before. KHOU sent multiple crews to cover the fires, as well as the evacuations. This promo was created to show the depth of our coverage, which included being first on the air with images of and information about one of the biggest fires.

Final Four 2011 POP
Whenever I create a proof spot, I try to use as much sound from the actual event as possible. With all of the coverage from Final Four, I had enough great sound to actually build the spot without any additional voiceover. I'm always on the look out for them because I think they really help sell a promo.
