Topicals are the bread and butter of what I do as a Promotions Producer. Sure, image spots can change your overall opinion, and POPs can remind you why you watch, but Topicals are designed to get you in the door. I believe Topicals should get your attention, but it's also important that they stick in your mind. My goal with Topicals is to leave you with a lasting impression, so that you won't forget to tune in "Tuesday night at ten."
I-Team Quanell X Investigation
Quanell X is a local community activist who is not without his share of controversy. This promo was created for an investigative piece which was supposed to shed some light on these controversies, and give Quanell X a chance to defend himself. The challenge here was to make the story enticing and interesting withough convicting Quanell X in the course of 30-seconds.

Radiation In The Water
The KHOU 11 News I-Team made a shocking discovery: high levels of radiation in drinking water supplies throughout the Houston area. This story affected almost everyone living in the Houston market, and it was billed as "the next Firestone investigation" in terms of scope and impact.

Employer Death Benefits
This story was about local employers who had taken out death benefit policies on their employees. It was basically employers cashing in when their employees died, while in a lot of cases the employees themselves (as well as their families) had no similar benefits and were left with nothing.

River Rising - Live Coverage
When the rising waters of the Mississippi threatened residents of New Orleans and Louisiana, KHOU 11 News sent two reporters to provide live coverage. This promo was designed to let people know that our reporters were on the scene and that they (the viewers) would be getting live reports until the threat subsided.

Fire Department Response Times
This story came out at a time when multiple fires had broken out and there were concerns that a firebug was setting them. The Defenders decided to check local fire departments to see their average response times, and they found several that took longer to reach the scene than most people would consider safe.

School Crimes
A shocking discovery by the Defenders revealed local schools watering down or even hiding crimes on their campuses. This led to several heated confrontations between the Defenders and school officials. The goal of this spot was to not only show people what the Defenders had found, but how vehemently the school system was fighting their findings.

Neighbor Feuds
Neighbors don't always get along, but sometimes their disagreements go way beyond shouting matches. The big challenge with this story was dealing with the sound bites. There were several strong bites, but most of the interviewees had thick accents or didn't speak English very well.

Road Rage Hot Spots
While at its core, this was simply another mapping story (showing several Houston intersections that had the highest number of road rage incidents), what I think make it interesting are the visuals. I have a good relationship with the photographer who shot this story, and he made sure to bring me the best footage for the promo.

Childcare Homes
In the wake of a terrible childcare home fire that killed several young children, the I-Team investigated local child care homes that had similar or sometimes even worse violations. I decided to focus on the confrontations in this story, to show viewers that this reporter wasn't afraid to take these violations straight to those responsible and get answers.

Dentist Mistakes
Spots like these are always a challenge to produce... after all, how many dentists out there would want to be shown in this light? However, through my good relationship with the station's photographers, I was able to track down some nice footage of a dentist office, as well as some file footage shot close enough that no one would be identifiable.

Car Finance
With these stories, there's always a battle between news and sales, with promotions stuck in the middle. News wants to do the story because it's important, but the sales dept. doesn't want to upset the valuable car dealership clients. I pride myself on being able to work with both parties in these situations and still come out with a spot that (hopefully) gets the job done.

Baby Killer Set Free
This entire story was centered around a powerful interview, but unfortunately very little of it was usable in a 15-second timeframe. I decided instead to make use of the historical footage we had of this killer, and use what little sound I had to sort of tell the story.

Tax Returns
I'm not usually a fan of starting off promos with a soundbite, but of course I have exceptions. In this instance I feel like the soundbite is concise, strong, and sets up the story. A good "gotcha" story, I played up the confrontation in the hopes that the conflict would draw viewers.

Natural Gas Danger
Natural gas is sold as a cleaner, safer alternative to oil... but it turns out, finding and producing natural gas isn't as safe as you might think. The real money in this promo is the very last shot. Nothing says "serious danger" like a fireball exploding out of your sink.

Medicare Fraud
On its surface, this was a story about rich people ripping off Medicare. The challenge was making viewers understand that the money trail actually led right to each of their pockets. I think the woman's soundbite in this promo really helps bring that point home.

Cyber Crimes
How do you make a story about hackers breaking into the city's computer system interesting? With stories like this I think you always run the risk of talking over viewers' heads and running them off. I did my best to convey these hacks as actual attacks, using the "cyber" language only when needed (so no one would think foreign troops were landing on Galveston Island).

Child Abuse
Stories involving children (especially abused children) are typically pretty poor on video, but I always make it a point to prod our photographers for their best or most creative footage. Turns out this photographer shot something very creative for the story, which I was able to repurpose for the promo.

Texans Countdown To Kickoff
This promo led up to a live show which preceded the first Texans preseason game of 2011 (against the NY Jets). I love creating sports promos because they really allow me to take the gloves off and use a more powerful look and feel. All Texans game video is property of the NFL, CBS, and/or KHOU, and is being used here for demonstration purposes only.

Lonestar Shootout
The Lonestar Shootout is just as much a rivalry between Dallas and Houston as it is between the Texans and Cowboys. The challenge with this spot was two-fold: Get Texans fans excited without upsetting the many Cowboys fans that live in Houston, and get both groups of fans to tune in to the special.
